What are the Different Type of Anxiety
In the United States, anxiety disorders seem to be quite common. So much so that nearly 19 million adults suffer from some types of anxiety disorder. The numbers may of course, be higher than this, since there are most likely unreported cases.
Anxiety disorder is a broad term used to describe several illnesses including, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder. Any of these can be coupled with mild to severe panic attacks, which is the abrupt onset of severe fear, racing heart, and the feeling of dying with no apparent reason.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
OCD or obsessive-compulsive disorder is a condition that causes people to repeatedly do something. In example, a fear of germs may cause someone to wash his or her hand several times repeatedly. Repeating behaviors is another sign of someone with OCD. He or she may feel the need to open and shut doors or drawers in a specific way for a particular number of times.
The problem with the disorder is the person cannot just stop washing their hands or opening and closing a door a specific number of times by willing themselves to do so.
Phobias
Phobias are anxiety disorders that cause panic attacks for many people. For instance, the fear of spiders is arachnophobia. When someone suffers from arachnophobia, he or she may be afraid to have a spider on them. He or she may not be able to enter an area knowing there is a spider around. Sometimes even viewing a spider photo can bring on a terrible fright. This is the number one type of phobia.
Other people have ophidiophobia, which is the fear of snakes and may react with a panic attack if in the presence of snakes.
Acrophobia is the fear of heights, it is a common disorder. This disorder can cause anxiety when someone tries to climb a flight of stairs or a few rungs of a ladder.
Agoraphobia the fear of leaving home can cause even severe panic attacks when you try to force someone who suffers from this phobia away from his or her home.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized anxiety disorder can be devastating since it can be chronic in nature. Tension, stress, worry and sometimes nothing at all can trigger this illness.
Social Anxiety Disorder
This is another common anxiety disorder that involves the extreme fear of doing something humiliating in front of other people.
Anyone who suffers from this type of anxiety disorder avoids going into any situation where there are other people. This person may feel as though he or she cannot cope with the embarrassment. Yet sometimes it is the fear of a bad or humiliating situation that can cause them to feel embarrassed in front of other people.
Conclusion
Anxiety disorders are common yet they can become very serious. Extreme feelings of being afraid of things can cause panic attacks. They are illnesses that are highly individualized. However, depending on the individual and the situation, treatment options will vary but are available.
