Ways to Cope With Anxiety

Anxiety can be an incredibly debilitating thing. It can affect your entire life and comes at the most inconvenient times. It can happen with no warning and cause you to feel sick, scared, overwhelmed among a wide range of other emotions. Some people feel so overwhelmed by the anxiety that they feel that they end up being nervous to leave the house and unable to function for fear that it will sneak up on them again when least expected.

There are some ways to ease the anxiety in your life and to cope with panic attacks or feelings of being overwhelmed. While some people will suggest medication as the way to cope with these feelings, it is often not the best way and can have other negative effects. There are tons of medications out there but many are either ineffective or have side effects and risks that far out weigh any benefit that they would provide the person taking them.

There are many methods of coping with anxiety that are completely safe, very effective and can give you the relief that is needed. These methods are free and require no visit to the doctor or cause to worry about side effects, in fact they can have a positive effect on other aspects of your life when implemented.

One thing that can have a huge calming effect on a person with anxiety is to make changes to their lifestyle and diet. There are some situations that are stress inducing. Take stock of what is important in your life, what you want to accomplish, is the situation a positive or negative situation and necessary.

Changing your diet and exercise habits can make a difference in the stress that you feel and how you cope with it. Cutting down on things like alcohol, caffeine and other mood altering substances can make a difference in how you react to situations of stress and how you cope with life in general. Exercise can be a good outlet for nervous energy, help focus your mind and help you relax so that you sleep better, eat better and concentrate more easily on tasks through out the day.

Exercise also releases endorphins that help to elevate your mood and can create a sense of well being even when everything around you is chaotic throughout the rest of the day. It can boost your self confidence and give you a chance to take time out from stressful situations.

Relaxation techniques and exercise routines such as yoga can be very beneficial for someone who is stressed out or has anxiety problems. Many self help books and psychotherapist promote the use of such techniques to help with people suffering from anxiety.

Self help books on the topic of anxiety and creating life skills are often beneficial in finding other methods that have worked for those who have faced similar problems. They can offer tips and help you feel like you are not alone in your battle against anxiety. Bookstores and libraries have complete sections dedicated to self help topics and there are many resources available in these area.

Sometimes the best thing that you can do when feeling anxious is to distract yourself. Thinking about the problem can perpetuate feelings of anxiety and make it worse. Keeping busy can help you to overcome such feelings and provide you with some comfort.

This can also give you a sense of accomplishment when you set goals for yourself and reach them. They do not need to be big goals or anything monumental but to set small goals that you can work towards and see your progress can relieve feelings of being overwhelmed and replace those feelings with ones of pride, satisfaction and happiness at a job well done.

Even if it is just cleaning out the closet that has been disorganized for years or writing letters to all the friends you have lost touch with in recent years. Setting and reaching your personal goals can help you to gain the skills that you need to overcome anything that should arise in the future and help you to work towards bigger goals as time goes on.

Another way to distract yourself from feelings of anxiety is to distract your mind with music. Whether it is uplifting or just your favorite radio stations top ten count down. You can change your mood and overcome feelings of anxiety by listening to music.

Playing an instrument has been an effective way for many people to relax, gain confidence and find an inner peace as well. Most musicians will tell you that when they are stressed out or upset about something they find solace in doing what they love. If you don't play and instrument there is no time like the present to take up learning a talent and gaining a better self esteem in the process.

You do not have to let anxiety control you. By finding the methods that work to ease your stress and distract you there are things you can do so that you are in control of anxiety.
