Anxiety can rise within your body with no notice over practically anything at all. It may be just a slight sense of something negative coming your way or it can be so severe it is debilitating.
Most people know they can get prescription medication to treat anxiety, but few realize that food can be a valid form of anxiety treatment. It's true! Food is a great way to relieve anxiety in mild to extreme conditions.
Anxiety is not a problem as long as there is a valid reason to be stressing out. For instance, feeling anxious for no reason all the time would be a big problem while feeling anxious before stepping on stage in front of a crowd of 500 people to sing would be normal and understandable.
If you stress over whether you should purchase a large can of tuna, get the best price or a small can, and not make such a large commitment, you have a problem. Look first to your diet before you begin any other form of anxiety treatment.
Most people indulge in ice cream and other sugary treats when they are stressed out, but these comfort foods are really horrible options if you are battling anxiety.
While sugar may make you feel better with increased energy in the short term, the drop in blood sugar that follows quickly after will contribute to even more anxiety. This obviously is not the kind of anxiety treatment you are looking for. Coffee is also not a good option for those with anxiety.
Some comfort foods can be even more damaging because they deplete your body of essential minerals. This is what leads to the jitters that are so uncomfortable.
For instance, if you eat too much calcium you could deplete your body of magnesium which contributes to anxiety!
Foods that jump-start the metabolism such as garlic, cayenne pepper or turmeric can make you just as nervous. However, others believe that these spices also can relieve you of stressful feelings.
Many people that suffer from anxiety have nutritional deficiencies. A shortage of vitamin B1, known as thiamine, can affect not only the nervous system but also your metabolism.
Many vitamins are needed for proper bodily functioning. For instance, many B vitamins such as choline or folic acid are essential for proper functioning of the brain and nerves. Pantothenic acid and vitamin B5 are essential for breaking fat and carbs down into energy.
When using food as an anxiety treatment, you have to include minerals known to help the nervous system function normally. This would include magnesium, calcium, and potassium.
You hear a lot of bad things about high cholesterol since the "bad" cholesterol leads to heart disease, stroke and heart attack. Yet, many people can increase the "good" cholesterol levels as part of anxiety treatment. This has proven to work since low cholesterol can cause anxiety.
The key is to get a diet that contains all the nutrients you need. Add plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Greens give an abundance of riboflavin and other B vitamins. White beans and pinto beans provide thiamin, known to lift depression and reduce stress levels.
Tomatoes, a fruit that's considered a vegetable is a stress reducer. It works with the immune system to protect the nervous system, which means it can treat anxiety too via a healthier nervous system.
Histamines in apples, pineapples and pomegranates help lower stress and therefore make a great anxiety treatment.
The potassium in bananas can improve your mood and help you cope with stressful situations. Fish and meat contain vitamin B3 that regulates your moods.
If you want to eliminate anxiety you have to eliminate processed, sugary foods from your diet. Go for fruit and vegetables with fish, poultry, and lean meat instead.
Track the foods you eat and note which ones make you feel best overall. You'll find that this anxiety treatment will make your overall health improve and reduce your anxiety. Of course, if you continue to have problems, always consult a physician to seek help to treat anxiety.
